This seems like a fitting phrase for the last year or so, right? If you attempted to visit our website you saw this phrase. If you tried to maneuver around this ever-changing world in any capacity over the last year, you’ve faced roadblocks. If you have tried to order anything at all, you’ve seen delays. It can be frustrating and even slow, but I find great beauty in “Under Construction.” You see – it’s the process that holds the hope, the excitement, the passion. When things are Under Construction, you can still make changes, adapt and overcome. There is time to get things right and create the outcome you desire. It’s important to take the time to appreciate where you are at so you can truly thrive where you are going.
We build the foundation first and then we build speed
As I was struggling through a Peloton run the coach explained intervals in this way, “We build the foundation first and then we build speed.” Cue the lightbulb moment…that is what we have been doing with our company for the past two years. We’ve been Under Construction…building the foundation before building speed.
In our Amazon Prime world, it can be easy to focus only on the speed, the outcome, the how fast things should happen. We get frustrated when things don’t move in our expected time frames and get lost in the comparison trap.
By spending the time to create a strong foundation – whether in construction, athletics, or anything you are working towards – your speed, pace, and outcome will be rewarded by focusing on the base first. Truly, without it there is nothing to build from.
In our first years as a business, we have survived a pandemic, a historic Texas freeze, the lumber market crisis, labor shortages, and supply chain issues. It hasn’t been easy. Some days it’s not even fun, but years of experience, a foundation of faith and confidence in our process has allowed us to keep sharing our gifts with some amazing clients!
By staying focused on one step at a time, slow in many ways (lightning fast in others), and taking care of people first, we are creating processes and teams that serve others well. We are building something both ourselves and our clients can be proud of for years to come. It’s how, as a new business we have survived this epic two years. It’s how we will serve well and grow speed and momentum as we go. It’s how we will leave a legacy for our children and community.
Foundation First. Speed Later.
